Looking after your crowns

Crowns need the same care that are lavished on teeth. They are strong and you'll be able to floss around the teeth. If a crown falls out you should try and see your dentist as soon as possible to have it read cemented. Do not try to do this with superglue or denture repair kits as this may make it impossible to use the crown again.

If you have a number of crowns and veneers and play contact sport, it is worthwhile having a mouth guard made at the same time as the crown. These are easy to wear and can be made in clear soft plastic or a combination of team colours or motifs you wish.

Preventing future dental problems

There are a number of ways to help prevent future tooth decay, both in and out of the practice. Visiting the dentist regularly is an important way of preventing future painful episodes, as the dentist can detect any signs of decay with X-rays and other new diagnostic tools.

In addition, the useofa fissure sealants and intensive Floride treatments can be discussed with your dentist and hygienist as a way of both arresting early decay and preventing future problems.

Away from the surgery, the daily use of fluoride mouthwash and toothpaste can help re- mineralise enamel and strengthen your teeth. It is also important to reduce the amount of sugary foods and drinks you eat as well as the frequency of eating and drinking.

Decay is a disease caused by the diet, so this must form the basis of prevention.

Regular appointments to your hygienist for advice and treatment is an important part of your decay prevention regime.
