Crowns

what can be achieved with "Metal Free" crowns and veneers

When a tooth is very broken-down it may be necessary to fit a crown. Crowns may also be advised if your teeth are discoloured or misaligned. In addition they may be used to restore already heavily filled teeth.

A crown is like a thimble that fits over the tooth andisa cemented or bonded in place with a special adhesive.

The process of fitting a crown first involves trimming the tooth down to a cylindrical shape and taking an impression which is sent to the laboratory. A highly skilled technician will then hand make your crown in one of Quay Side Dental Practice approved laboratories.

At the second visit, the crown is tried in to ensure a perfect fit and is then cemented into place.

Whenever possible, all of the restorations available in Quay Side Dental Practice are produced so as to match their surrounding teeth and insure an aesthetic result, as well as restoring the function of your bite.

Which type of crown is right for me?

Metal Free Crowns (or precision fit porcelain crowns)

For a maximum aesthetic result, which is particularly appropriate for front teeth and visible back teeth, a crown can be made of high quality porcelain alone. Advanced restorations such as "Procera" use computer aided technology to produce a biocompatible, non metallic core which fits exactly to the prepared tooth. This specially constructed core adds considerably to the strength of the restoration.

Advanced porcelains are then applied in layers onto the core with the shading and characterisation of the restoration matched closely to your natural tooth.

A dentist would be delighted to discuss the choices available to you in terms of high quality porcelains and precision mare laboratory work to ensure that your restored crown looks functions and feels just like a real tooth.

Porcelain bonded to Gold Crowns

Your crown can be produced by bonding high quality porcelain to a metal core constructed of a special alloy.

The silver-coloured metal core, or coping, provides a strong base to the restoration and has tooth coloured porcelain matched to your other teeth and bonded to it to create the finish crown. This crown can be used anywhere in the mouth.

Traditionally they are very strong crowns that can look natural and they are very useful for situations where the teeth need to withstand large forces.

The high gold alloy is biocompatible and so the chances of an allergic reaction are low.

Gold crowns

This is the very best type of crown we can do.

On some occasions where space is limited and function essential, a gold crown may be the preferred option.

The gold crown is made entirely 60 per cent gold alloy with no tooth coloured porcelain covering. Ideally use at the back of the mouth where appearance is unimportant and function is essential.

They are extremely hard wearing and very long lasting.
